Owen Maslyk #41

Owen has always loved sports. As the third of four boys, he is constantly inspired to keep up with his older brothers—and takes pride in teaching and encouraging his younger brother along the way.

Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just three years old, Owen doesn’t remember life without it. He is completely insulin-dependent and wears both a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump. Diabetes is part of his story, but it has never diminished his passion for competing, improving, and doing what he loves.

Owen often chooses to play sleeveless, never shying away from showing his pump and sensor. By wearing his diabetes technology proudly, he shows other young athletes that type 1 diabetes doesn’t have to keep them on the sidelines. Several families have approached us to share that seeing Owen compete at such a high level—with his devices visible for everyone to see—has inspired their own children. For Owen, that may be one of his most meaningful accomplishments.

The number 41 holds special meaning for Owen. The first Major League Baseball player he ever met—and the first to give him an autograph—was Kansas City Royals pitcher Daniel Lynch IV, who wore number 41. Because pitching is one of Owen’s favorite positions, he adopted the number soon after meeting Daniel.

As it turns out, #41 was also a natural fit for the Athletes 4 T1D name—making it more than Owen’s jersey number. It has become a symbol of his journey as an athlete living with type 1 diabetes.
